Ananda in the Himalayas is set amongst 100 acres of virgin Sal forest, the Destination Spa is built in the Maharaja of Tehri Garhwal’s palace estate and located 260 km. north of New Delhi. A short 45 minute car ride from Dehradun’s Jolly Grant airport through scenic mountain roads bring you to Ananda.
The first view is of the Maharaja’s palace which is still in use by the royal family. In the extension of the palace wing is the resort’s reception, a library, a billiard room with a 150-year old antique billiards table and houses the presidential Viceregal Suite. A treat for the connoisseur, this suite has a spacious sitting and dining area and a plush bedroom featuring a period four-poster bed. The attached dressing and bath rooms are beautifully built with antique fittings and furniture. With its own private terrace and a roof top Jacuzzi overlooking the sloping landscaped gardens and the distant Ganges Valley, staying at the Viceregal suite takes you back into India’s regal past.
A short distance away from the palace wing are the two 2-bedroom villas and one 1-bedroom villa are ensconced by the surrounding forest and are ideal for a quiet retreat into a tranquil environment. Each villa is elegantly appointed with an expansive living room, a pantry for the butler, a dressing room and a huge bathroom featuring a private sauna. The 40 sq meters private pools in each villa are surrounded with a deck area equipped with comfortable lounge beds.
A pleasant walk down from the Palace, through sculpted gardens lush with greenery, flowers and peacocks, past the private villas brings you to the expansive two-floor spa, the restaurant house and the guest rooms. The 70 understated yet luxurious deluxe rooms feature panoramic views of the valley or of the Palace. With a serene and natural feel, each room is a haven in itself with luxurious beds and large walk-in closets, perfectly appointed bathrooms with bathtubs overlooking landscaped gardens or the valley, and private balconies with picture perfect views. The 3 Deluxe Suites and the Ananda suite facing either the Valley or the Maharaja’s palace have secluded private gardens with tented salas overlooking the valley.
The expansive spa spread across 25000 sq. ft. with its 24 treatment rooms, state of the art gymnasium, outdoor temperature-controlled swimming pool and luxurious hydrotherapy facilities is the centre of attention at Ananda. Entering the reception area of the spa is an instantly calming experience with its ethereal background music and chants. All wellness programs here are completely tailor made to the individual starting with a personal consultation with the ayurvedic doctor or yoga guru who plan out the rest of the program schedule. Signature treatments are the Ayurvedic Abhyanga performed in by two therapists in perfect synchronization and the Ananda fusion which blends in multiple international therapies customized to individual needs.
Ananda’s health cuisine is a vital part of its wellness philosophy and for those guests on specific programs such as ayurvedic rejuvenation, weight loss or detox, the menu is customized in consultation with the chef and the ayurvedic doctor.
