Retrace the steps of Nizams, European royalty, enchanting Begums, distinguished Heads of State and walk the walk of Kings through this Palace in the sky. 2000 feet above Hyderabad, Taj Falaknuma Palace’s 60 beautifully refurbished and lovingly restored rooms allow you to journey into the clouds and into the gilded ages, where grandeur and excess is celebrated and savoured in equal measure.
Those who have revelled in its opulence have revelled in its large Venetian chandeliers, rare furniture, grand marble staircases and gurgling fountains, priceless statues, and objects d’art, stained-glass windows, unique sketches and murals encased in ornate frames, a world-class collection of crystal as well as the elaborate gardens said to be personally conceived by the Nizam. The Palace Library, a replica of the one at Windsor Castle, is a collector’s envy as it is home to the rarest of manuscripts, books and encyclopedia’s , all of which were selected and brought back by the Nizam himself.
One of the most magnificent palaces known to king and man alike, the Falaknuma Palace was built in 1894; it is a prestigious palace, situated on a hill 2,000 feet high. At that height it has a view of the entire city, and is spread over 32 acres of land, with a built-up area of 19,400 square meters. The name Falaknuma meaning ‘mirror of the sky’ is reflective in the construction of the Palace that embodies the spectacular moods of the sky.
Laid out in the shape of a scorpion, this magnificent edifice took 10 years to complete and was designed by British architect William Ward Marrett. It is popularly believed it took 22 years to be decorated.
The arrival into the Palace in a restored Horse drawn carriage, the shower of rose petals and the traditional welcome are certainly going to take you back to the life styles of the Royalty that lived and visited here. The entire Palace has been lovingly restored back to its original glory and one can enjoy the plush luxury that was enjoyed. The guest rooms have been carefully restored to its original beauty with great attention to the room decor in order to recreate that authentic feel of the days gone by. Each room has a plush bed with 310 thread count Egyptian cotton sheets. Well appointed bathrooms with additional conveniences like multiline telephones, wireless internet, high end private bar, in-room safe and interactive televisions.
The two restaurants Adaa – Fine dining Indian Cuisine and Celeste – All Day dining with emphasis on Italian food are great venues to feast on authentic cuisines cooked by the Palace chefs in the years gone by. The flavors are all authentic and the ingredients are fresh with some dishes being made from the famous royal kitchens of Hyderabad. The Palace boasts of the exclusive Jiva Spa which has also been carefully recreated from the fabled lifestyle and culture of Indian royalty and the healing therapies that embrace Indian spirituality. The signature treatment “Nawab – e – Khas” is a two and half hour experience of sheer indulgence and relaxation using ingredients from the times of the Nizam.
